About the artist

“I seek a color palette that is bold, meditative, and memorable. Creating multilayered oil paintings is a mysterious, even mystical process that requires a disciplined work ethic of total immersion and awareness. For me, the float frames I choose are an important part of an enhanced viewing experience.”

About the artist
"My work explores classic themes of time, nature, balance and stillness. A painting offers infinite possibilities and joy in creating elaborate color relationships with complex patterns and forms. My paintings are composed of countless layers of transparent acrylic, oil, and cold wax mediums. Imagery is derived from personal archives and objects collected on journeys both near and far. I work to resolve the intersections of transparency with opacity, transience with permanence, and the ethereal with physical aspects of nature.  In studio practice, as in life, I seek a quality of significance, meaning, beauty, and grace."

About the artist

This series is comprised of self-portraits that explore blackness; the value of black bodies in America; historic violence against those bodies; and the artist’s feelings as a bi-racial Black man.

The paintings are self-portraits and are oil on canvas. Dixon’s approach is reductive with no background or setting, thus emphasizing only the figure and how the artist is perceived by himself and viewed by others. The focus is on the brush stroke, minimizing the details and capturing only the essence of emotions, expressions and gestures. The broad and bold gestures are soulful, conveying tension, frustration, pain, horror, dismay and sorrow, the artist’s experiences on a regular basis.

About the artist
"I am employing violent scraping, palette knifing, dabbing, dripping, reducing, tearing apart, cutting through, and building up so the paint overwhelms with something very specific, yet distantly remembered from somewhere else. This process of abstracting and excavating these oft–told American histories simultaneously asserts my formal, absolute control of the surface while allowing me to retreat from the field".

About the artist

There is a word in Portuguese, “Sentido”, that has to do with experiencing things with all one’s senses.  Not just to transfer what you have seen….but to use all your senses to record the place or object.  That is what my work is about.

When I go into the Amazon for instance, I take pictures, make small watercolor drawings, write down not only what I see, but also what I smell, hear and feel under my feet. I remember what it was like to touch something. I record all these experiences. But I never work there. The time is devoted only to recording ideas and feelings. I then return to the studio in Healdsburg, print out the photos, go through my notes and start to record not only what I could see, but what I knew to be true about the place.  I hope the work translates that about the object or place; which I feel is much more important than getting it exactly right visually.

About the artist
"I make oil paintings and also prints, lately big woodcuts. I greatly admire the Bay Area Realist painters of the last century, especially Richard Diebenkorn. I use palette knives and very large brushes from the hardware store, layering and splashing oil paints on until I can get the canvas back to more or less what inspired the image originally. Nature and weather atmospheres, with some sort of human imprint, like suburban houses, or bathers by the sea, are my subjects."

About the artist
The work is my interpretation of the local landscape with emphasis on architecture. I paint in oil and prefer highly saturated color and simple shapes to describe the scene. Often the work is from a series that meanders from more to less detail and back again. The San Juan Islands and Skagit Valley in my home state of Washington feature prominently.

About the artist
While light, weather and atmosphere act as the impetus in my work, it is my aim to probe the depths of an inner space through meditations in light and color. I am searching through the language of contemporary abstraction, a deeper connection, an understanding of the consciousness of the present moment. The paintings themselves lie in the places between memory and new moments of discovery.

About the artist
In looking at the real world with great attention, in fixing my gaze on reality, reality is transformed into a kind of marvelous dream. I have gradually become passionately attentive to the most ordinary things that constitute the decor of my life. In my paintings I expose a new consciousness which observes and reveals hidden secrets that are there for us for the taking. We can find excitement in our everyday lives, we can see wonders of light reflected, and colours to astound us as we sit at our dining table or in our living room, or as we walk in the garden..

My need to paint comes from that feeling of marvel which I have to share; my heightened awareness and the mystery of my vision.. The world of everyday objects holds surprises for whoever looks at it attentively. The focus of my work is to invite you to share my visions of moments of color and light that may dazzle and delight your senses.

About the artist
Ideas take form in unexpected ways. A friend, viewing photos of his daughter’s wedding just as I walked in his shop set in motion a series of paintings titled “Wedding Book”. As the series evolved I borrowed wedding photographs from family & friends, not to create portraits, but to explore “our time” evidenced in this recurring ceremony.

Artist: Ellen Glasgow
Ellen Glasgow "Outer Banks" oil on linen, 24" X 60”

About the artist
It really is just NATURE that interests me. I like vistas, strong horizontal lines broken by groups of trees or distant islands…coastal North Carolina and the Outer Banks. Edges where sky meets horizon and the mysterious habitat of the fence row and the open spaces of Northern Indianan with clouds or islands “floating” on the horizon continue to enthrall my eye.

About the artist

"I have explored and painted the Circumpolar North for more than four decades, from Hudson Bay in the Canadian Arctic to Alaska, the Bering Sea, and the Siberian Russian coast. For me, the most challenging thing about painting such extraordinary places as Alaska and the Arctic is finding a way of celebrating the beauty and magic of this landscape without mimicking it, competing with it, or trivializing it. I try to make paintings that seen up close are almost completely abstract—all about paint on the surface of a canvas—and from a distance are completely realistic—all about how it feels, rather than looks, to be in the great Northern forest that circles the globe. When people who don’t know my work ask me what I do, I tell them that I paint big abstract paintings that happen to look like birch trees.”  .

About the artist
I am interested in an approach to art making that explores the often-conflicted relationship between the decorative traditions in geometric patterns found in other cultures and western modernism. However, the recent paintings, prints and collage-drawings avoid culturally specific subject matter in favor of a more elusive pictorial terrain of contemporary abstraction. Inasmuch, my work attempts to reflect a broader generational curiosity where the familiar and unfamiliar converge.
